Just over 3 weeks ago we welcomed Carlos Benfeito to our team as our new Chief Technology Officer. You probably saw the press release and blog come through about Carlos’ extensive experience growing and scaling engineering teams within the insurance sector, most recently as a VP of EIS Group and before that as Head of Insurance Products at Element AI. Less than a month in and Carlos is already having a big impact on our engineering team and is playing an important role in our growth.
But we wanted to really get to know Carlos, who is he exactly? While a scan of his LinkedIn page showcases the depth of his experience, we wanted to dive a bit deeper and give him a real introduction.
Of Portuguese descent, Carlos comes from a HUGE family. If you were to just count his brothers, sisters, and their kids you would be counting well into the 60’s!! He likes to think his ability to organize and manage people comes from growing up in such a big family and we think he’s right!
Speaking of family, Carlos is a proud dad to a 14-year-old girl and is so invested in her development that he launched an organization for young ladies in tech called YLIT. Launched in 2017, Carlos explained that 50% of young women in grades 7 – 9 would consider a career in computer science, but by the time they hit grades 10-12 that decreases to 2%. The goal was to host regular events featuring women who work in STEM. He hoped that hosting these events would provide role models to the next generation of girls and hopefully convince them to pursue an education and future career in STEM.
Outside of his family life, Carlos is a fitness fanatic. He played football throughout college and university and even tried out for the Montreal Alouettes. Putting aside his dreams of becoming a professional athlete to pursue a career in Software Development didn’t stop his love of fitness. He works out almost daily and is an investor and Co-Founder in a fitness AI startup with bodybuilding hall of famer Roy Callender.
As we were finishing up this article, we asked Carlos for one final fun fact about himself. We were a bit surprised by his answer. Turns out he went to see Titanic13 times in theatres in 1997! That’s over 40 hours of rewatching the epic love story between Jack and Rose!
And there you have it, our CTO in a nutshell, a family man who cares deeply about the future of women in STEM, never misses leg day, and is a sucker for a blockbuster romance.
Once again, welcome to the team Carlos!!
